i put it on a high shutter speed with the shutter priority tab. but the pictures i took came out so dark, i couldn’t even see the image. how can i fix it?

I asked my parents if I can have a Nikon D40x camera because it is cheap. Besides, I’m just a teenager and I’m just starting. But I don’t know if they would approve.
P.S I am an honor student and if you told me to be good in your studies, well I am already trying.

I want a new camera, I dislike mine, it’s a Canon S5 IS Powershot. I want a DSLR, I prefer Canons or Nikon’s, also, one that isn’t over 1000$ would be nice. Advice?
