There are third party lenses available in both mounts. While normally I would recommend you stick with either Nikon or Canon lenses there are some decent quality third party lenses. Look at the following
Tokina: Probably the best of the third party lenses in my opinion. Very good build quality. Not many lenses available though.
Tamron: Has a good selection of lenses
Sigma: Probably has the most available lenses. Some are pretty good while others are not.
I would not even consider any other manufacturers. All others are truly junk.
There are third party lenses that will fit on either a Canon or a Nikon body, but not both. The two mounts are too radically different from one another. Now there are adapters for fitting Nikon lenses to a Canon body, but functionality is limited. No autofocus. No vibration reduction. And if the lens doesn’t have an aperture ring, no control over the f-stop.
If it’s time to upgrade, get another Nikon. Why would you switch to Canon when you’re getting a Nikon now. If it’s your intention to get a Canon–then get a Canon. Their lenses are not compatible at all–they won’t fit physically.
Tamron makes “good enough” AF/Auto lenses for most cameras (IMHO) for most general purposes – wouldn’t use them professionally, tho.
