You want to hear ALL the different kinds of lenses explained?
That would take a little booklet….
Each piece means some specification of a lens. Looks like you’re talking about Nikon glass, since I see some unique Nikon related “codes”. You may find this page useful in describing what all the different letters mean on Nikkor lenses
Please keep in mind that Ken Rockwell (author of above referenced site) is a very qualified expert in everything Nikon, so his technical points are usually good and valid, but when it comes to conclusions – he’s very subjective and has some very radical and controversial opinions on many things, so do take his advice with a grain of salt, if you happen to wander into other areas of his web site.
You don’t ask for much, eh?
An f/3.5-5.6 is a zoom lens that has a minimum f-stop of 3.5 when zoomed out, 5.6 when zoomed in. If you don’t understand f-stop and aperture, you’ve got a ways to go before anything else will make sense.
VR are lenses that reduce vibration. So you can probably step the speed down to 1/30th or 1/15th of a second without camera jitter, depending a lot on the focal length.
AF usually means auto-focus.
