The camera I currently have, a Panasonic Lumix 12x optical zoom is great, but I want to upgrade to a DSLR. What kind of lens do I need on a DSLR that will give me the same zoom? I’m currently looking at the Nikon d40x.

I know there are filters out there, but what kind of filters do you (the people with DSLR cameras) use to make your pictures pretty? I like to take pictures of wildlife with a Fuji s8000 with an 18x zoom. This camera is good but it has a lot of noise. I want to upgrade it but I am not sure whether a picture from a superzoom such as the Canon sx10 fully zoomed would be better than a cropped picture from an entry level dslr with a 300mm lens.
