I’ve been super interested with photography since I was a kid. When my mom bought a canon powershot 460 (simple digital camera) I just couldn’t stop taking pictures. I’m just worried I might not maximize the features of a DSLR coz I don’t have much knowledge about it

Of course not. You can do what ever you want. You may become frustrated when you attempt to use the camera in a way that will not work, but you don’t know that and continue to try and try to get it to happen.
DSLR’s were made for working pros. They nearly exactly emulate what the pro was doing with film, but with a lot of enhancements. To be a pro takes a lot of education, experience and dedication to excellence. The point and shoot cameras are a lot of fun … I own two, but they are playthings.
My DSLR is a professional tool that makes money … sometimes a lot of it, but it is not the tool but the artist that makes the images … time after time after time with consistency
If you really want to be successful, get yourself a good used Nikon F4 or Canon EOS 1n and a good general zoom lens (24-85mm is a good range) and start leaning how to compose, expose, develop and print your images.
You may find a community college near you that has a photo department where you can learn all you need to know to be successful at producing magic using a camera.
Take a look at the link below and see what the pros are doing and then try to emulate them. I could be a lot of fun until you can start shooting film and learning under a good instructor.
no, you don’t have to but it helps. If you know the basic principles of photography learning from/avoiding mistakes will be much easier otherwise it will always come to: Bad picture – no idea why – I always have the same settings and some are good and others are not.
I love photography too and never took any classes. I’ve taken some great shots. You just have to be in the right place at the right time. And your camera should come with an owner’s manual to tell you how to maximize it’s usage. You can always look up info on the net about it too.
Not really since most dslr have an auto setting. This feature will turn the dslr into a point and shoot camera which you are familiar anyway. But auto does not work great everytime. You may find yourself in tricky photo situation and you have to manually set the camera. That is the time that you need to know your camera and photo techniques. So don’t worry and get a dslr.Use its auto setting and at the same time learn the manual fully, read photography books and magazines and websites. Just enjoy and learn and pretty soon you will be good at it.
alot of features
takes a long time to learn
can’t use the screen to take picture
you have to use the viewfinder
you must learn alot before using
Well no, you don’t have to learn it in order to use the camera (that’s what the manual is for), but it’s certainly helpful in teaching you how to compose a better picture.
