I was recently told that I’d be surprised of how many Nikon folks are that Canon doesn’t have manual control over the popup flash. It has TTL flash exposure compensation but Nikon also let’s you set it to 1/4th power or 1/2 power for example.
I was just wondering if any Nikon dSLR users actually use this feature.

I use the EV flash compensation and I do not use manual control to dial it down. Most of the time, I’m using the pop-up for fill flash, so I will typically meter manually and set my exposure and then use the pop-up at (-0.7) ev or(-1.0) ev. Honestly, I never looked into manual control for the pop-up.
I remember my first automatic flash. It was about 1969-70 and it seemed totally weird to NOT make any calculations! It seemed like voodoo magic to let the flash control the output, even though there was a high and a low position. My Metz has manual and then 5 different automatic positions, so it’s pretty versatile without doing all the math.
You may find some professional or semi-professionals Nikon shooters who use this feature but few amateurs well. When I shot Nikon, I rarely used the pop-up flash for anything other than fill flash if the light was behind my subject. In those cases, as I do with Canon now, I left the flash in TTL mode. When I really need a flash, I carry an shoe-mount flash though I may use a sync cable or wireless commander to get that flash off the camera.
