I have a tamaron 28-300 since the sensor is film sized do I need a new lens? I shoot bikes in action so I need something in this range.

1) If U have a Tamron with the Nikon-mount and the built-in motor, the D5000 should work fine.
2) If U have a Tamron with the Nikon-mount and *no* built-in motor in the lens, then get the Nikon D90 instead. U can then use the existing lens.
3) If U have a Tamron that is for a different mount, then U will need a new lens to fit onto a Nikon camera.
The 28-300mm was designed to cover the same area as 35mm film, so it will easily cover the smaller APS-sized area of a D5000 (or a D90). Thus, the issue isn’t the sensor size, but rather of a) mount and b) built-in lens focusing motor.
Tamron lens is 18-270 with VR system. Performs same as Nikon 18-200VR and is cheaper. Note that your Tamron lens works fine on a D5000 but the start point of 28 is somewhat too long since it makes 40 mm in film size and that will not make you happy. I suggest to buy the new 10-24 from Nikon as a wide angle complement or a Tokina 12-24 which is a huge lens. If you can afford it go for the 17-55/2.8 from Nikon.
Unless your Tamron has the BIM (built-in motor) feature, you’ll have to manually focus on the D5000. It’s not an impossible task, as you’ll need to prefocus and anticipate. This is what sports photographers did for years and years before autofocus was invented and some of the greatest sports shots were taken this way. According to the Tamron website, they do not currently offer a lens in that range that will autofocus with the Nikon D40, D40x, D60, or D5000.
The closest 3rd party lens I can find for you is the Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM. A great alternative is the Nikon 70-300mm VR, a well reviewed lens. A budget alternative (since you probably have the kit lens to cover the 18-55mm range) is the Sigma 70-300mm with the built-in motor. or the Tamron Di LD 70-300mm.
Of course, we are assuming that the lens you have has a Nikon F mount. Consider looking on your local Craigslist (my preference) or on Ebay for a used version of one of the above lenses.
If you want auto focus you’ll need a lens with a auto focus motor in it, since the D5000 doesn’t have it in the body.
If your Tamron lens has Nikon mount, it will work fine with the new Nikon D5000.
