I would suggest Nikon D3000.It is easy to use and provide excellent image.
or if you can afford Nikon D90 is an excellent camera.Great sensor, amazing colors out of the camera.Feels great in hand, very comfortable to hold.
However, this is just recommend. Both Nikon and Canon are good. You have to try them both yourself which one is fit, comfort to your hands and you feel easy to navigate.

Ill recommend the latest additon nikon D3000 in the entry level dslr’s. If you wanna use for common everyday photography i suggest you buy the 18-105 and the 70-300 or 80-400 lenses along with it, ill go with the 18-105 and 80-400, it gives a good wide angle and a decent telephotic view when you need it.

As you said, both camera systems are awesome, so you’re pretty unlikely to regret choosing either one. Historically, Nikon has been known for making the best lenses, while Canon tended to to make the best combination of body and lens technology. These are just slight differences, though, and neither company is bad at either.
It usually comes down to which feels better and more natural to you. The best advice I think I can give is to spend some time holding and trying out each one–as well as their lenses–and see which one seems to best match how you “see,” and how the controls feel in your hands. You’ll likely discover you have a preference.
(Just as an aside, my icon photo of the Thinker was taken with a Canon Rebel XS film camera when I was just beginning to take photography seriously).

I own and recommend the Canon Rebel XS for many reasons. It’s build is superb and so are the photos. It’s very easy to learn and use.
I’ve added a couple of lenses besides the kit lens at 18-55. I have a
Tamron 18-200, my work horse because it’s wide at the bottom with a pretty good reach. I also have a Canon 75-300 for that long stuff that pops up from time to time.

First I would define a budget, then go to a good camera store and select the ones that fit into your budget. Hold them, try them, choose the one you’re most comfortable with. Canon, Nikon are the best camera manufacturers, you can’t go wrong with any of them
