Image stabilization got its start in camcorders, and it was achieved by digitally zooming in on the subject.  While this worked, it made the image look pixelated and blocky.

That&#039;s why the term &quot;optical image stabilization&quot; came about: it&#039;s saying that you&#039;re not getting any of this reduced quality digital zoom crapola in your image, which is a good thing.  Canon cameras use only optical image stabilization, whether or not it&#039;s labeled &quot;optical.&quot;

You will be very saitisfied with your stabilized lense, they usually allow you to shoot your pics a few stops slower and get nice clear images.
