Need A Dslr Camera With 18-55mm Lens At Least For Photography School – Canon Rebel Or?

I am in Photography school and this is the required hardware. I also have to purchase a Light Meter and Monitor Calibration Device. Any advice where the best buy for all would be? I’d like to stay under 500.00 for the camera.

Look at the Canon 20D. You can get a used on on ebay for about $350 and it will take you farther in photography than a Rebel. Then I would get the EF 28-105mm lens. This will run about $150 on ebay and this is the best all around lens you can get for the money. Stay away from the 18-55mm, its cheaply made. The 28-105 is made in Japan and the 18-55 isn’t. Always, ALWAYS, get lenses made in Japan. The others are very poor quality. The 20D cost about $1400 new a few years ago and is by far the best bang for your buck if you’re entering the DSLR world. Good Luck!

If you can pay abit more I would recommend Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens.DIGIC III image processor provides fast, accurate image processing; Live View Function.

or if you want under $500 D40 ia an excellent choice.

I would recommend that you get a Canon XS DSLR.It is a (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera and sales for $549.00 up to $599.00. It would be worth it to save an extra hundred bucks. After you become proficient in using it, you can slowly add different lens to obtain full use of the camera. Most low cost point and shoot cameras do not offer the option of taking pictures in B&W. You would have to convert those color pictures with the software provided with the camera. However, with the Canon you can set it to take B&W pictures. I used a 300mm lens on my Canon and obtained some very awesome pictures of the moon. Picture quality is great and the craters are in great detail. Canon has been my only choice in photography due to the quality of taking pictures with those cameras. The only real filters you should invest in will be (1) UV (ultra violet) filter (primarily to protect the lens. (2) Polarized filter (to take pictures through glass and aquariums (keeps glass from glaring). Check out the following link. I have a few pictures posted on Flicker. As you will see you can’t go wrong with a Canon. Good luck.

    I’d recommend the Nikon D40
    Excellent, excellent camera
And if I were you, I’d buy everything from Amazon, they always seem to have the best prices, and no tax!

For under $450 you can buy a Nikon D40 with 18-55 mm lens (the D40 has a special feature no other current DSLR has … the ability to sync with flash at its highest shutter speed (1/4000th second) important to those who use flash in bright sun).
A good Sekonic Studio light meter will cost you about $180. The incident light meter type is what most photo schools recommend.

And either a EyeOne2 or Spyder monitor calibration tool will cost around $250

So they make you purchase a camera and they expect you to buy a light meter after buying your camera? What school do you go to? One of those snobby rich harvard kids one? Sucks for you man.

Can’t go wrong with Canon or Nikon. I’m a Canon guy, myself. I do all my camera shopping from adorama, bhphoto, and sometimes even newegg.
