As you’ve heard, it will boil down to personal preference. The two are generally considered equals. Canon and Nikon tend to constantly challenge each other in terms of technology and features at a given price. The flurry of new DSLRs both have released in the last two years is a very good example of this rivalry.
Which is better really depends on you. The classic reasons to choose one or the other usually boil down to lenses, ergonomics and/or price. In my case, it was primarily the glass and the price.
In my case, I really liked the Nikon D200 but, the D200 was being discontinued and the D300 was stilll a couple months from release and even more expensive. The Canon 40D was $300 cheaper than the D200. I had several friends shooting Canon bodies and Canon lenses who were willing to let me borrow equipment if I needed it. That largely sealed the deal and pushed me toward Canon. If I had it to do all over again today, I might go Nikon because cost and availability aren’t the same factors they were for me two years ago.
Ultimately, you’ll have to try out cameras from both companies to see which fits you best. The Nikon D5000 and D90 are great cameras and offer some performance advantages over Canon Rebels like the T1i. But if you need a faster, more robust body, the 50D is very well built and has a $600 price advantage over the Nikon D300.
Don’t forget however that DSLRs purchases are at least as much about lenses as they are about lenses than cameras (if not more). So, if Nikon’s incredible AF-s 14-24mm f/2.8 is the lens you need for the shot you want, a Nikon is in your future. On the other hand, if you think the EF 24-105 f4L IS USM is the perfect general purpose lens, only Canon EOS bodies are compatible with it.
All these things are or should be factors in your final decision. You really can’t go “wrong” with either brand. They are the top two manufacturers of professional DSLRs and lenses in the world. If you have ever been to a professional sporting event or major formal event, chances are very high the professional photographers at either venue were shooting either Canon or Nikon.

    Entry level: Canon 450D
    Advanced Amateur: Nikon D90
    Semi/Pro-Pro: Nikon D300 + 24-70/2.8 or 17-50/2.8 (or similar)
    Semi/Pro-Pro full frame – Canon 5D and 5D II 24-70/2.8L, 17-40/4L and 70-200/2.8L
Pro/more money than sense – Canon 1Ds III same lenses as 5D
    Pro/sports photog – Canon 1D III 70-200/2.8L
There you are…basically depends on what level of camera you are gunning for. In the long run Canon is better if you intend to go full frame.

I personally prefer Canon. The quality of Canon cameras is world renown for being amazing and taking some incredibly life like pictures. I’ve trusted Canon for the last 5 years and they’ve yet to let me down. Here’s a bunch of reviews on different Canon cameras.http://www.viewpoints.com/Canon-Digital-…

Your own of a personal preference, and also depends on how much you’re willing to spend, etc. Yourself to choose Canon or Nikon. The both are best. There are many Canon lovers out there that will bash Nikon and vice versa. Sort of the Mac vs PC of the camera world.

I own a Canon, and never have owned a Nikon so I would say the Canon DSLR. They are said to be pretty much equals.
