You seem to be pretty sure that you like Canon. So buy the model in the price that you can afford. Remember camera bodies are replaced every 24 months or less. Buy it new not used. THE most important thing is to buy quality LENSES not the camera body. Canon lenses are excellent so buy only canon lenses for your canon body. Lenses out last the body many times over.

Since you’ve already committed yourself to the maker of the camera, I’m not going to try to steer you into a more logical direction financially but rather see what I can find in the ‘semi-professional’ range (with some lenses, since you will need to think about collecting some).

I would get a beginner camera, Nikon D40 or a Canon Rebel XTi or XSi. They’re way less expensive than the “pro” cameras. Practice on one of those, and in a few years you could get a full frame camera. Plus, in my opinion, the lenses matter more than the camera body anyways. I have a canon and I use a 28-135mm IS f/3.5-5.6 lens, and a 50mm f/1.8 II lens as my main lenses. :)
Oh, and buy the body only if you can, the kit lens isn’t really that good. Save an extra $100 and buy a 50mm or another lens instead.

Professional level cameras start at around 4,000$ with the Canon EOS 1d Mark III, i highly doubt you have that kind of money for a Digital SLR camera. Start with a Canon Like the Canon EOS 30d. I have this camera, it’s a semi-professional model, and i absolutely love it, it’s great. The images look very Sharp- depending on the lens you have, and the skill of the photographer. Right now, you can get a 30d For 700$- without a lens. A good lens would got around another four hundred dollars, so easily you’d be spending over one thousand dollars:
A good lens to go with that would be a 18-135mm IS or even an L lens, if you have that much money

The Canon DSLRs start with the Digital Rebel, in about the $650 range for the kit including a lens, or about a hundred less just for the body.
I personally would suggest that you look at the 30D or 40D. These are quality enough to be used by many professionals, and will run you around $1000 or so for a kit including a lens.
The next leap would by to a full frame DSLR, like the 5D or 1D. The new 5D is pretty amazing, and priced at $2700 for the camera body. You can get the older 5D new on amazon for just under $2000.
It really just depends on what kind of budget you have, and whether you just want something to learn on, or plan to get very serious with it. If you have any specific questions about any of these models, feel free to ask. I’ve used all of them at one time or another, except for the Rebel.
