What Is The Best And Relatively Affordable Canon Or Nikon Dslr?

Hi everyone. I am looking really hard at a Nikon D300. They are ALMOST out of my price range but I think it’s worth it. However, is there a less expensive Nikon DSLR? one that is almost of the same quality? how about Canon? I am pretty open to any suggestions.
Thank you!

If you are looking at the D300 in price range but can’t really go for it.. The D90 is great. It has the same or almost the same sensor and produces great images, especially in low light (without flash). Canon hasn’t mastered this as much as Nikon has. Almost though!
If you get the D90, you can also spend a little more on lenses. Lenses are more important than the body. The 50mm 1.8D lens is ~$120 and is _awesome_.
Add: Yes, if you don’t know how to use it, don’t bother.. Really! Also, the problem with the D60 is that it won’t autofocus non AF-S lenses. This limits your lens choice if you want autofocus only.

First of all there is no need for you buying a camera that expensive unless you know how to use it properly. By properly I mean not on the auto settings but fully manual. If you don’t then a D40 or D60 and a few lenses should do the trick. Image quality is far more dependant on the lens you use than the body you use. There will be little or no difference between a D60 and a D300 as far as image quality. The only difference will be in high ISO performance where the D300 will perform better.
Get a cheaper camera and invest your money in some nice lenses. Practice for a year or two then upgrade your camera when you can appreciate the difference. Remember lenses will last a lifetime while camera bodies will be obsolete in a few years.
If you want to look at Canon the Rebel series would be a good start.
