There are 2 good model for that price range Canon Rebel T1i and Nikon D5000. Both are good camera that take great picture quality.

Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12MP Digital SLR Camera (Black) with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens & EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Deluxe Accessory Kit

The Nikon D5000 is a great camera! It comes with a nice kit lens on Amazon for $720. If you are considering this as an investment, don’t worry too much about the body, as everything from (especially Nikon) is fabulous. With a DSLR, the most important component in taking great photos (besides the photographer) is the lens.
So make sure that you buy into a system that has room to go. I love NIkon for this. My D60 shoots lenses made in 1974.

The Canon Rebel series is Amazing and is in the price range you talk about on Amazon. This Canon rebel I have linked to in my source has a AMAZING 15.1 MEGAPIXELS!
You can blow up pictures to HUGE sizes! Wouldn’t that be awesome? Have a look at it, I hope this helps you out!

I would suggest the Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-Inch LCD and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens

If you don’t need the video the T1i offers then go for the Rebel XS because it is cheaper. The Canon 40D is a superb camera and would meet all of the needs for your college class, though it may be a little over your budget.

Go into a store and compare which one feels better to you out of Nikon’s D5000 and Canon’s T1i. :)
