The Canon 40D is a superb camera and would meet all of the needs for your college class, though it may be a little over your budget. It comes with a nice kit lens on Amazon for $720. If you are considering this as an investment, don't worry too much about the body, as everything from (especially Nikon) is fabulous. With a DSLR, the most important component in taking great photos (besides the photographer) is the lens. So make sure that you buy into a system that has room to go. I love NIkon for this. My D60 shoots lenses made in 1974. The Nikon D5000 is a great camera! It comes with a nice kit lens on Amazon for $720.
