I would buy the best you can afford. Usually the more you pay the more features the camera has not necessarily better photos. The real value on any DSLR is the quality of lens you put on it. More often then not the lenses will cost more then the camera body but thats where the real value and quality photos will come from, not the body. Check out the Nikon users websites to gain insight into what boday and what lenses are right for you and the types of photos you want to take.
Go for a D80 with a zoom lens kit. This camera is more intended for use by more experienced users than say D40x or D60, but the price difference is not big and once you get used to it there is not much more you can ask concerning image quality.
There are the cheap 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses, or you can buy the superior 18-200mm VR which is more expensive.
The Tamron 28-300mm is also an option since it is a rather good lens.
You should also consider a fast prime, for portraits and macro, the 60mm f/2.8 micro is excellent and cheap and it also double as a great portrait lens (90mm equivalent in 35mm format).
You may also want to invest in a true white angle, if you are interested in landscape photograph, but Nikon’s 12-24mm is too expensive for a novice, therefore sth like Tokina
12-24mm or Sigma 10-20mm is ideal.
Finally if you are interested in portrait photography you are going to need a hot shoe flash.
The Nikon SB600 is great, or you can buy the somewhat cheaper and stronger Sigma EF500 DG which is also very good.
D40 or D40x
good for beginners
and affordable
i suggest you buy D40X or D80 because the price affordable and the mega pixels are 10.2.
