I would get the Olympus E510. It is a little bit bigger but the Image Stabilization (IS) feature is worth the $ difference.
I have experience with lots of Olympus cameras (including E1 and E500 that are predecessors of E410 & E510). They are very well built and have excellent processors and optics.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Olympus does made good DSLR. But you might want to also check either the Nikon D40 and the Canon Digital Rebel XT/350D. Check them out at a store, handle them with your own hand and fiddle with the menu. They’re pretty much comparable in term of price/performance but since cameras are personal, you might like one better than the other.
Your best buy is Nikon’s D80, because it allows you to use all Nikon AF lenses back to the 1980’s.
This can save you money when you go lens shopping.
I agree…Olympus would be the way to go for someone not used to SLR cameras….u can do everything manually or they have pre-set scene modes, which most other SLR cameras don’t have.
